Beginners

Aikido is a non-aggressive, non-competitive Japanese martial art and indeed a path that will provide you with the capability to develop your mind, body and spirit, enhancing all aspects of life.  We train in a friendly, caring environment, by sharing knowledge, experience, energy and dedicating our time in the overall pursuit of perfecting our Aikido.  Below, Chris sensei demonstrates one typical way of training: paired exercises with a set format of one person attacking and the other person “receiving”.  We also sometimes practice doing the exercises on our knees, to build strength and balance via the legs and hips.

NB. All videos are for reference only, and for safety reasons these exercises should not be attempted without the supervision of a qualified instructor.

Join our Beginners Program
If you would like to see if Aikido is for you, you are welcome to attend any Thursday night session, when we hold induction classes every week. This introduces you to the basic movements and etiquette of Aikido and provides a platform for your ongoing participation in any of our weekly classes, and you don’t have to wait for a specific week to start.

You just need to wear some comfortable exercise clothes, eg. shorts and a t-shirt to start with.  If you already have a uniform from doing karate or judo previously, feel free to wear that.  We are also starting children’s classes in late 2017, but note that this will be for ages 7 to 12 only.

There is a gravel car park area just in front of the building at 95 Commercial Rd.  Evenings are always busy because of the multiple gyms in the local area, so you are welcome to park there if you can find a spot, however you might need to find on-street parking on Harcourt St or Commercial Rd.

When you go up the stairway to our dojo, just take a seat on the chairs at the top.  It is best to arrive at about 6:00pm, to fill in a short form before training.  The usual instructor every Thursday is Mark Pearcy, and he will come over and introduce himself when you get there, and show you anything else you need to know before starting.  Please also note that we don’t have eftpos facilities, so it is cash only for class fees (once you are coming in regularly, you can choose to pay monthly fees via online banking).  The cost is $40 per person, which covers the first 4 Thursdays you attend (these don’t need to be consecutive weeks).

If the Thursday night time is not ideal for your schedule, any other class in the timetable is open for students of any level or experience.  Tuesday nights, Thursday nights, and the weekend classes are the next most appropriate sessions if you are starting out.
